India has huge stakes in Africa. So has China, especially in the energy sector. And the following are some pertinent questions:

Are we in competition with China when it comes to securing energy resources in Africa? Is not the competition adding to the escalation of resources’ bid price thereby putting both nations at a disadvantage? Do we have a strategy of synergy in energy with China in Africa?

Anirudh Menon, Researcher, Africa Studies Programme, Gateway House, Mumbai interacts with Rakesh Neelakandan, Content Editor, Commodity Online on all these and more in an e-mailed interview.

Anirudh says, “Despite being uneasy neighbours, China and India understand that it is sensible to join hands (in the energy front). Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) are partnering with Malaysia’s Petronas in a joint venture in the Greater Nile Oil Project of Sudan. Another project where the two countries are cooperating is the joint venture between GAIL India Limited and China Gas which will pursue opportunities in CNG, City Gas, Pipeline, CBM, LNG and Exploration and Production projects.”
